Moms often have to wear many hats for their children. They are the cooks, teachers, disciplinarians, chauffeurs, counselors, playmates, and cheerleaders. With all of the responsibilities that mothers have, it is easy to develop burnout and stress. I experienced some of this over the past few days and today, I lashed out at my daughter because she did something that made my cleanup harder to accomplish. In this post I want to discuss ways that moms can overcome burnout and thrive.
Get a Support System
When you’re dealing with mom burnout, it’s important that you have people around you who will be there. Maybe your older siblings can have your kids hang out with them all weekend while you enjoy some much needed time off. Or you can meet with your pastor to talk about some of the struggles you’re dealing with as a mom. When you have a strong support system in place, you can reduce mom stress.
Improve the Self-Care
Motherhood can suck the energy and motivation out of you, and this is why self-care is important in overcoming mom burnout. Set aside one to two days out of the week to pamper yourself and recharge mentally and emotionally. Maybe you’ll need to wake up earlier before the kids so that you can enjoy a warm bath and get in a 30-minute workout. While the kids are at school, you can visit the spa for a massage and facial. These things help you take better care of yourself during the week.
Get to the Root of the Burnout
There are several reasons why you could be in burnout mode. Inconsistent discipline of the kids might be a factor. When you don’t discipline every time the kids disobey, they start to test you to the point where you get angry and frustrated. More consistent discipline can reduce the burnout. Another reason for the burnout is overscheduling. You have a lot of commitments but some are not really necessary. Take inventory of those commitments and narrow them down to the ones that are the most important. Once you figure out the root, you can solve the problem.
Do a Social Media Detox Periodically
Believe it or not, excess social media exposure can cause all kinds of insecurities in moms. When you compare yourself to other moms on social media, you might feel as if you’re not good enough. As a result, you wear yourself out and then stress enters in. It is sometimes a good idea to take a break from social media so that you can focus more on loving and accept yourself just the way you are.
Get Your Rest
It is also important that you get the rest you need. Avoid staying up too late at night, and if necessary, take naps whenever you can. When your body is well-rested, you’re better able to be the best mom to your kids.
Spice Up Your Routine
Sometimes you might need to change things in your routine if you’re in a rut. Maybe you and the kids can visit some affordable new restaurants over the next few weekends. Or you might decide to fix different types of meals for breakfast in the morning. Maybe you can include a dance party with your phone where you and the kids sing and dance for about an hour.
Speaking of routine, add meal planning to it so that there will be less stress about mealtime. On the weekends, go through your pantry and write down the staples you have. Then write down any recipes you can prepare that will last at least one to two weeks. If needed, purchase any additional items for the recipes. Then you would fix five to six easy meals and freeze them in containers. This saves time and reduces the burnout.
Don’t Seek Perfection in Your Parenting
Remember that you’re doing the best you can for your children. Sure your house might not look pristine, and maybe your kids seem unappreciative of your efforts. But know that perfection isn’t possible, and you want to give yourself grace.
In conclusion, motherhood gets stressful and burnout is real. But with these hacks, you can come out on top and thrive as a mom.
